How do you adjust a loose ring?

Published in Ring Sizing 3 mins read

Adjusting a loose ring can be done temporarily with methods like tape, or more permanently by a jeweler. Here's how to adjust a loose ring:

Several methods exist, ranging from temporary fixes you can do at home to permanent alterations best left to a professional jeweler.

Temporary Solutions for a Loose Ring

These methods are ideal for rings that are only slightly too large or when you need a quick fix.

  • Ring Adjusters (Sizers): These are typically clear, plastic or silicone pieces that slide onto the back of the ring band, filling the gap between the ring and your finger. They are inexpensive and come in various sizes.

  • Ring Noodle: Similar to ring adjusters, these are small, hollow tubes made of soft, flexible material that slip onto the band. They're comfortable and discreet.

  • Tape Method: (As shown in the reference)

    1. Cut a thin strip of tape (about half an inch wide).
    2. Roll the tape tightly into a small loop, sticky side down.
    3. Attach the tape loop to the inside of the ring band.

Permanent Solutions for a Loose Ring

If the ring is significantly too large or you want a long-term solution, consider these options:

  • Resizing by a Jeweler: A jeweler can remove a small section of the ring band and solder the ends back together. This is the most common and effective method for making a ring smaller. Be aware that some rings (like eternity bands) are difficult or impossible to resize.

  • Adding Sizing Beads or a Sizing Bar: A jeweler can solder small metal beads or a bar to the inside of the ring band. These beads or the bar reduce the inner circumference of the ring and can be more comfortable than a fully resized ring, especially for people with larger knuckles.

Important Considerations:

  • Material of the Ring: Some metals are easier to resize than others.
  • Ring Design: Rings with intricate designs or stones set all the way around the band may be more challenging or impossible to resize.
  • Cost: Temporary solutions are very inexpensive. Professional resizing costs vary depending on the metal, complexity of the ring, and the jeweler's rates.
