How is a Starter Strip Made?

Published in Roofing Materials 1 min read

A starter strip is primarily made by modifying a standard shingle and using common roofing materials.

The Manufacturing Process

Starter strip shingles are typically made from traditional 3 tab square cut design shingle. The manufacturing process involves taking this standard shingle and mechanically cutting- off a specific part – the exposure portion. This results in a narrower strip designed specifically for the roof's edge.

Materials Used

Based on traditional construction, starter strip shingles are composed of:

  • A fibreglass mat as the base layer, providing strength and stability.
  • A surface covered with mineral granules, which offer protection from UV rays and contribute to fire resistance.

Essentially, a starter strip utilizes the same core materials as a standard asphalt shingle but is produced by altering the shape and size of a traditional 3-tab shingle through a cutting process.
