How do you change a video from portrait to landscape on Samsung?

Published in Samsung Mobile 3 mins read

While you can't directly change a video's recorded orientation from portrait to landscape on a Samsung device without editing software, you can ensure your phone records in landscape mode or displays portrait videos in landscape mode. Here's how:

Ensuring Landscape Recording:

The easiest way to record in landscape is to physically rotate your phone before you begin recording. The camera app will automatically adjust.

Rotating the Screen for Playback:

To force the screen to rotate to landscape mode for videos (even if they were recorded in portrait), you need to enable auto-rotate. Here's how:

  1. Access Quick Settings: Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick panel.

  2. Edit Quick Panel (If Necessary): If you don't see the "Auto rotate" icon, you may need to add it:

    • Tap the three vertical dots (More options).
    • Tap "Edit buttons".
    • Find the "Auto rotate" icon and drag it to your desired position on the Quick panel.
    • Tap "Done".
  3. Enable Auto Rotate: Ensure the "Auto rotate" icon is enabled (it will be highlighted or colored differently when active). If it says "Portrait" or "Landscape," tapping it will change the orientation lock. You want it to say "Auto Rotate".

  4. Rotate Your Phone: With auto-rotate enabled, when you play a video, rotate your phone to landscape orientation. The video player should then switch to landscape mode as well.

Important Note: If "Auto rotate" is not an option and you only see "Portrait" or "Landscape," it means screen rotation is locked in that orientation. Tapping the icon will switch between locking it in portrait or landscape.

Programmatically Changing the Video's Orientation:

If you want to permanently change the orientation of a video from portrait to landscape, you'll need to use a video editing app. There are numerous free and paid apps available on the Google Play Store, such as:

  • Google Photos: While not a dedicated video editor, Google Photos offers basic rotation features.

  • Adobe Premiere Rush: A more advanced option with a subscription.

These apps typically allow you to rotate the video 90 degrees at a time, effectively changing its orientation. Keep in mind that rotating a portrait video to landscape will likely result in black bars on the sides unless you zoom in, which might crop the top and bottom of the video.
