How to Remove Sandpaper From a Sander?

Published in Sander Maintenance 2 mins read

Removing sandpaper from a sander, particularly a finishing sander with a hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) pad, is generally a straightforward process.

Simple Steps to Remove Sandpaper

To remove sandpaper from a sander that uses a hook-and-loop attachment system, you typically follow these steps:

  1. Grip the Sandpaper: Find an edge or corner of the sandpaper that is attached to the sander's base pad.
  2. Pull and Wiggle: As shown in the reference video, you should be able to pull your sandpaper free by wiggling it a little bit. The hook-and-loop system is designed for easy detachment. Gently but firmly pull the sandpaper away from the pad while wiggling it slightly to help release the grip.
  3. Detach Completely: Continue pulling until the entire sheet of sandpaper is free from the sander's pad.

Post-Removal Cleaning

After removing the used sandpaper, the reference suggests a crucial step for maintaining your sander:

  • The last thing that you need to do is take some compressed air and clean off the bottom of your base plate pad. This removes dust and debris that can accumulate on the hook-and-loop surface, ensuring better adhesion for new sandpaper and prolonging the life of the pad.

Removing sandpaper is quick and easy, allowing you to switch grits or replace worn sheets efficiently during your project. Always ensure the sander is unplugged before handling the sandpaper.
