How to screen record in Windows 10?

Here's how to screen record in Windows 10 using the built-in Game Bar:

Using the Game Bar for Screen Recording

Windows 10 has a built-in screen recording feature called the Game Bar. While primarily designed for recording gameplay, it can record any application window.

Steps to Screen Record:

  1. Open the Game Bar: Press the Windows key + G to open the Game Bar. If this doesn't work, ensure the Game Bar is enabled in your Windows settings (Settings > Gaming > Game Bar).

  2. Start Recording:

    • Once the Game Bar is open, you'll see several widgets. Look for the "Capture" widget.
    • Click the Record button (it looks like a circle) to start recording. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Alt + R.
    • If you want to record audio, make sure the microphone icon is enabled within the Capture widget.
  3. Recording Status: A small recording timer will appear on your screen, usually in a corner.

  4. Stop Recording:

    • To stop recording, click the Stop button in the Capture widget or press Windows key + Alt + R again.
  5. Locate the Recording: The recorded video will be saved as an MP4 file. You can find it in the Captures folder, which is located within your Videos folder (usually in your user profile). The full path is typically C:\Users\[Your Username]\Videos\Captures.

Important Considerations:

  • Application Requirements: The Game Bar may not record certain applications, particularly the desktop or File Explorer. It generally works best for recording individual application windows.

  • Game Bar Settings: You can customize recording settings within the Game Bar settings, such as video quality and frame rate.

  • Alternative Methods: If the Game Bar doesn't meet your needs, there are many third-party screen recording applications available, some of which offer more advanced features.
