How to Screen Record on Windows?

Published in Screen Recording 3 mins read

You can screen record on Windows using the built-in Xbox Game Bar, or through third-party applications. The simplest method uses the Xbox Game Bar, which is pre-installed on Windows.

Here's how to use the Xbox Game Bar to record your screen:

  1. Open the Xbox Game Bar: Press the Windows key + G (Win + G) simultaneously. This will bring up the Xbox Game Bar overlay.

  2. Configure Audio (Optional): Check the audio settings. If you want to record system sounds and/or your microphone, make sure the volume icon for "System Sound" and "Microphone" are unmuted (not crossed out).

  3. Start Recording: Click the "Record" button (the circle icon) on the Capture widget within the Game Bar. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Alt + R (Win + Alt + R) to immediately start recording.

  4. Stop Recording: Either click the blue recording timer bar that appears on your screen, or use the same keyboard shortcut Win + Alt + R to stop the recording.

  5. Find Your Recording: Your screen recordings are automatically saved as MP4 files in the "Captures" folder, which is located inside your "Videos" folder. The full path is typically: C:\Users\[Your Username]\Videos\Captures.

Key Considerations and Troubleshooting:

  • Game Bar Requirement: While called the "Xbox Game Bar," it's not just for games. It works for recording most applications. However, it might not work on the Windows desktop or File Explorer. You will know it is working if it shows the recording timer/toolbar when you start recording.
  • Permissions: If the Game Bar doesn't launch, ensure it's enabled in your Windows settings. Go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and make sure the toggle is set to "On." Also, make sure background recording is permitted.
  • Microphone Access: If you plan to record your microphone, ensure the app has permission to access it in Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
  • Third-Party Alternatives: If the Xbox Game Bar doesn't meet your needs (e.g., if you need more advanced features, the ability to record full-screen on the desktop, or you experience problems with Game Bar functionality), consider using third-party screen recording software like OBS Studio (free and open-source), ShareX (free), or paid options such as Camtasia. These usually offer more comprehensive features, editing options, and customization.
