How Do I Link My Website to the Authenticator App?

Published in Security 3 mins read

To link your website account to an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator) for two-factor authentication (2FA), follow these general steps. Keep in mind the exact wording and menu options will vary depending on the specific website.

Steps to Link Your Website Account to an Authenticator App

  1. Log in to the Website and Access Security Settings: Start by logging into the website you want to protect with two-factor authentication using your username and password. Navigate to your account settings. Look for a section labeled "Security," "Privacy," or something similar. This section often contains options for enabling 2FA.

  2. Find the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Option: Within the security settings, locate the option to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  3. Choose Authenticator App as the 2FA Method: The website should offer different 2FA methods, such as SMS (text message) codes or an authenticator app. Select the "Authenticator App" option.

  4. Generate a QR Code or Unique Code: The website will then generate a QR code and/or a unique alphanumeric code. This code is what links your account to the authenticator app. Do not share this QR code or unique code with anyone.

  5. Open Your Authenticator App: On your smartphone or tablet, open your preferred authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy).

  6. Add the Website Account to the Authenticator App: Within the authenticator app, look for an option to add a new account. This is often represented by a "+" icon or a menu option like "Add Account" or "Scan QR Code."

  7. Scan the QR Code or Enter the Unique Code:

    • Scan QR Code: If you see a QR code on the website, select the "Scan QR Code" option in the authenticator app and use your device's camera to scan the code displayed on your computer screen.
    • Enter Unique Code: If you don't have the ability to scan the QR code, or if the website only provides a unique code, manually enter the code into the authenticator app.
  8. Verify the Connection: After scanning the QR code or entering the unique code, the authenticator app will generate a six or eight-digit code that changes every 30 seconds or so. Enter this code into the verification field on the website. This confirms that the authenticator app is correctly linked to your account.

  9. Save Backup Codes (Important!): The website may provide you with backup codes. These are crucial if you lose access to your authenticator app. Save these codes in a safe place, such as a password manager or printed and stored securely.

  10. Enable 2FA: Once the code is verified, enable 2FA for your account.

Now, whenever you log in to the website, you will need to enter your password and the code generated by your authenticator app.
