How to Self-Tan?

Published in Self-Tanning 3 mins read

Achieving a believable self-tan requires preparation and careful application. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Exfoliate: Before applying any self-tanner, thoroughly exfoliate your skin. This removes dead skin cells, creating a smooth surface for even application. Use a washcloth, exfoliating gloves, or a scrub in the shower. Pay particular attention to dry areas like knees, elbows, and ankles.

  2. Dry Your Skin: Ensure your skin is completely dry before applying the self-tanner. Any moisture can interfere with the product's absorption, leading to streaks or an uneven tan.

  3. Apply in Sections: Work on one section of your body at a time (e.g., legs, arms, torso). This helps ensure even coverage and prevents the product from drying before you've had a chance to blend it properly. Use a tanning mitt to avoid staining your hands.

  4. Wash Your Hands: After applying self-tanner to each section, immediately wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This will prevent orange palms.

  5. Blend at Wrists and Ankles: These areas tend to absorb more self-tanner, resulting in a darker, unnatural appearance. Use a light touch and blend the product carefully to achieve a seamless transition. You can also use a makeup blending sponge.

  6. Dilute Over Your Joints: Similar to wrists and ankles, joints like knees and elbows can become overly dark. Before applying self-tanner to these areas, apply a small amount of lotion as a barrier or mix a small amount of lotion with the self-tanner. This will dilute the product and prevent excessive absorption.

  7. Give Your Skin Time to Dry: Allow your skin ample time to dry completely before getting dressed. This typically takes at least 10-15 minutes. Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid streaks or smudging. Avoid activities that cause sweating during this time.

  8. Apply Sunscreen Every Day: Self-tanner does not provide sun protection. Protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays by applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even when it's cloudy. Reapply every two hours, especially if you are swimming or sweating.

Following these steps will help you achieve a natural-looking, streak-free self-tan. Remember to always read and follow the instructions on your specific self-tanning product.
