What are Heavy Thunderstorms?

Heavy thunderstorms, more accurately referred to as severe thunderstorms, are characterized by their potential to produce damaging weather conditions. According to official definitions, these storms are capable of generating specific hazards:

  • Hail: Hail that is an inch or larger in diameter, which can damage property such as plants, roofs and vehicles.
  • Wind: Wind gusts exceeding 58 mph, which is strong enough to break off large branches, knock over trees, or cause structural damage.

In summary, a thunderstorm is considered "heavy" or "severe" when it has the potential to produce large hail or strong winds that can cause damage.
