Iron-on repair tape, also known as invisible mending tape, is used to mend tears or create hems in fabric by using heat to melt the adhesive and bond the fabrics together. It's essentially a double-sided glue activated by heat.
Here's a general guide on how to use iron-on repair tape:
- Prepare the Fabric: Ensure the fabric is clean and dry. If mending a tear, position the edges of the tear together as closely as possible.
- Cut the Tape: Cut a piece of iron-on repair tape slightly larger than the area you need to mend or the length of the hem you want to create.
- Position the Tape:
- For tears: Place the tape underneath the tear, covering the area that needs to be bonded. The fabric should be lying flat with the tear edges touching.
- For hems: Fold the fabric to create the desired hem. Place the iron-on tape between the folded hem and the main fabric.
- Protect the Fabric: Place a thin pressing cloth (like a cotton handkerchief or piece of muslin) over the area where you'll be ironing. This protects the fabric from direct heat and prevents the iron from sticking to any adhesive that might seep out.
- Iron the Area: Set your iron to a medium heat setting (refer to the tape's instructions for the correct temperature, as it can vary). Press the iron firmly over the pressing cloth and the area with the tape for the recommended time (usually 10-20 seconds, but check your tape's instructions). Use a back-and-forth motion, applying even pressure.
- Let it Cool: Allow the fabric to cool completely before moving or handling it. This allows the adhesive to set properly.
- Check the Bond: Gently test the repaired area or hem to ensure it's secure. If needed, repeat the ironing process for a longer duration.
Important Considerations:
- Always check the care instructions for both the fabric and the iron-on tape before you begin. Some fabrics are not suitable for ironing.
- Some iron-on tapes come with a paper backing. If so, remove the paper backing before ironing, exposing the adhesive.
Iron-on repair tape offers a quick and easy way to mend minor tears or create simple hems without sewing.
