How to Attach Bias Tape

Published in Sewing Techniques 2 mins read

Attaching bias tape is a fundamental sewing technique used to finish raw edges neatly. It involves carefully pinning and stitching the tape to the fabric.

You attach bias tape by pinning it to the fabric with right sides together and stitching along the bias tape's inner fold line.

Bias tape, cut on the bias (diagonal grain) of the fabric, offers flexibility, making it ideal for curved edges. The process ensures a clean, durable finish.

Steps for Attaching Bias Tape

Follow these simple steps to attach bias tape to your fabric edge:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Lay your fabric out on a flat surface. This helps prevent wrinkles or puckers while you work.
  2. Position the Bias Tape: Pin the opened-out bias tape to the fabric edge with right sides together. The raw edge of the fabric should align with the raw edge of the bias tape.
  3. Stitch Along the Fold: Carefully stitch right along the fold line that is closest to the edge of the bias tape you just aligned with the fabric. Precision is crucial here, so take your time and go slowly to ensure your stitches are straight and consistent.

After this first line of stitching, the bias tape can then be folded over the raw edge to the other side of the fabric and stitched down again, encasing the raw edge completely. This creates a clean, finished edge.

Following these steps ensures the bias tape is securely and neatly attached, providing a professional finish to your project.
