How to Turn a Spaghetti Strap Inside Out?

Published in Sewing Techniques 3 mins read

Turning a narrow fabric tube, like a spaghetti strap, right side out after sewing it is a common task in sewing. The most popular and easiest method involves using a small tool or object to help guide the fabric through itself.

Using a Safety Pin (The Easiest Way)

A simple and effective method for turning a spaghetti strap or other narrow fabric tube is to use a safety pin. This technique leverages the pin to pull the fabric through the confined space of the tube.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Attach the Pin: Securely attach a small safety pin to one end of the fabric tube, ensuring it's attached only to the top layer of fabric at the very end.
  2. Insert the Pin: Gently push the safety pin head-first into the opening of the tube.
  3. Guide the Pin: Using your fingers on the outside of the tube, carefully work the safety pin through the inside of the tube. You'll essentially be scrunching the fabric onto the safety pin as you push the pin further in.
  4. Continue Pushing: Keep doing this until the safety pin comes out on the other side. This is the critical step where you push the pin all the way through, pulling the attached end of the tube along with it.
  5. Pull the Fabric: Once the safety pin emerges from the other end, grab the right sided Fabric. Hold the end with the safety pin steady and gently pull the fabric tube down and off the pin, allowing the right side of the fabric to turn out as it comes off.
  6. Finish Turning: Continue pulling gently until the tube is all the way right side out. Adjust the fabric along the tube to ensure it's smooth and evenly turned.

Tips for Success

  • Use the Right Size Pin: A smaller safety pin works best for very narrow straps.
  • Secure Attachment: Make sure the pin is firmly attached to the fabric end so it doesn't come loose mid-process.
  • Be Patient: For longer or very narrow tubes, this process can take time. Work the fabric slowly to avoid damaging it.
  • Check Seam Allowances: Trim seam allowances carefully before turning to reduce bulk and make the process easier.
  • Pressing: Once turned, press the strap flat with an iron for a crisp finish.

Other Methods

While the safety pin method is widely used, other tools can also help, such as:

  • Tube Turning Tools: Specialty tools designed specifically for this purpose, often consisting of a wire loop that you feed through the tube.
  • Bodkins or Threaders: Similar to safety pins, but specifically designed for pulling cords or elastic through channels.

However, the safety pin method is readily accessible and effective for spaghetti straps, allowing you to turn the fabric with ease by pushing the pin through and then pulling the correct side of the fabric to complete the turn, as described in the reference.
