Is virgin used for boy or girl?

Published in Sexuality & Language 1 min read

The term "virgin" can be used for both boys and girls, though it is more commonly associated with girls.

The term "virgin" signifies a person who has never engaged in sexual intercourse. The term isn't inherently gendered; it describes a state of being (lack of sexual experience) rather than a specific gender. While societal norms have historically linked virginity more closely to women, the core definition applies equally to men.

The Greek word often translated as "virgin," parthenos, (as in the Parthenon), while typically applied to women, can also describe men specifically denoting absence of sexual experience.

Therefore, to reiterate: "virgin" can be applied to both genders.
