How to Give Access to Photos on Google Drive

Published in Share Google Drive File 3 mins read

Sharing your cherished memories or important images stored on Google Drive is straightforward. The easiest way to give access to your photos is by sharing them directly via a link.

Here's a simple process to share a specific photo or folder of photos on Google Drive:

Steps to Share Your Google Drive Photos

Follow these steps to generate a shareable link for your photos:

  1. Select the file you want to share. This could be a single photo or a folder containing multiple photos. Navigate to your photo within Google Drive and click on it to select it.
  2. Click Share on the top right. After selecting the file, locate and click the "Share" button, usually found near the top right corner of the interface.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow under 'Get Link'. In the sharing dialog box that appears, find the "Get link" section. Click the small downward arrow next to the current sharing setting (it might say "Restricted" by default).
  4. Choose to share the file with 'Anyone with the link'. From the options that appear in the drop-down menu, select "Anyone with the link". This setting makes the file accessible to anyone who has the generated link, without requiring them to sign in to a Google account.
  5. To decide what people can do with your file when you share it, select either Viewer, Commenter, or Editor. Once "Anyone with the link" is selected, you'll see another drop-down menu next to it that controls permissions. Choose the access level you want to grant.
    • Viewer: People can only look at the photos.
    • Commenter: People can view and add comments (useful for collaboration on specific images).
    • Editor: People can view, comment, and make changes to the file (like renaming or deleting – use with caution for photos).
  6. Click Copy link. After setting the access level, click the "Copy link" button. The shareable link is now copied to your clipboard, ready for you to paste and share via email, messaging apps, or social media.

Understanding Permission Levels

Choosing the correct permission level is crucial for controlling how others interact with your shared photos.

Permission Description Use Case Example
Viewer Can only see the file. Sharing photos with family/friends to view.
Commenter Can view and add comments. Getting feedback on photos for a project.
Editor Can view, comment, and make changes/delete. Collaborating on a photo album project.

For most photo sharing, Viewer access is sufficient and recommended for safety.

Once you copy the link, you can paste it anywhere you wish to share the photos with others.
