How Do You Shave With a Shaving Brush?

Published in Shaving Techniques 3 mins read

Shaving with a shaving brush involves preparing your face and applying lather for a smoother, more comfortable shave. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps for Shaving with a Shaving Brush

  1. Prepare Your Shaving Area: Begin by either filling your shaving bowl with a small amount of warm water or running warm water in your sink. The water will be used to keep your brush wet and warm throughout the process.

  2. Soak Your Shaving Brush: Thoroughly wet your shaving brush with warm water. This softens the bristles and prepares it to create a lather. Let it soak for a minute or two.

  3. Load the Brush with Shaving Cream/Soap:

    • Cream: Squeeze a small amount of shaving cream (about almond-sized) onto the tips of the brush bristles or directly into your shaving bowl.
    • Soap: If using shaving soap, wet the soap puck with warm water. Then, swirl the damp brush on top of the soap for 30-60 seconds, until a thick paste begins to form on the brush.
  4. Create a Lather:

    • In a Bowl: If you loaded the cream/soap into a bowl, swirl the brush vigorously against the sides and bottom of the bowl to create a rich, creamy lather. Add a few drops of water if the lather seems too dry.
    • On Your Face: Alternatively, you can lather directly on your face. Use circular motions with the brush to work the cream/soap into a lather directly on the areas you plan to shave.
  5. Apply the Lather: Using the shaving brush, apply the lather to your face in circular motions. This helps to lift the hairs and coat them evenly, providing a protective layer for the razor. Ensure all areas to be shaved are well covered.

  6. Shave: Shave with your preferred razor using short, gentle strokes, rinsing the blade frequently. Shave with the grain of your hair growth to minimize irritation.

  7. Reapply Lather (Optional): For a closer shave, reapply lather and shave across the grain, or even against the grain on subsequent passes, if your skin can tolerate it.

  8. Rinse and Dry: After shaving, rinse your face thoroughly with cool water to remove any remaining lather. Pat your face dry with a clean towel.

  9. Aftershave: Apply an aftershave balm or lotion to soothe and moisturize your skin.

  10. Clean Your Brush: Rinse the shaving brush thoroughly with warm water to remove all traces of soap or cream. Gently squeeze out excess water and store the brush bristles-down (if possible) in a stand, or on its side to allow it to air dry completely. This will help prolong the life of your brush.

By following these steps, you can effectively use a shaving brush to achieve a comfortable and close shave.
