How Do I Turn Off Conditional Formatting in Sheets?

Published in Sheets Conditional Formatting 3 mins read

To turn off conditional formatting in Google Sheets, you need to remove the specific rules that are applying the formatting. You can do this by accessing the Conditional format rules sidebar and deleting the unwanted rules.

Steps to Remove Conditional Formatting Rules

Removing conditional formatting involves a few simple steps, focusing on the specific rules you want to eliminate.

  1. Select a Cell: Start by selecting any cell within the range where the conditional formatting is applied. As the reference states, "select any cell that's been included in the rule".
  2. Open Conditional Formatting Rules: Go to the Format menu in Google Sheets and click on Conditional formatting. This action will open the "Conditional format rules" sidebar on the right side of your screen.
  3. Identify the Rule: The sidebar will display a list of all conditional formatting rules applied to the current sheet. Find the specific rule you want to turn off. Rules are listed by the range they apply to and the formatting condition.
  4. Remove the Rule: Next to each rule in the list, you will see icons. Locate the Remove rule icon, which looks like a garbage can. Click on this icon for the rule you wish to remove.
  5. Rule Deleted: Clicking the garbage can icon immediately removes the rule, and the conditional formatting it applied will disappear from your sheet.

Tip: To remove a conditional formatting rule, select any cell that's been included in the rule, and then open the Conditional format rules window. A list of applied rules will appear. Select the Remove rule icon, which looks like a garbage can, to delete the rule.

Managing Multiple Rules

If you have multiple conditional formatting rules applied to your sheet or even to the same range, they will all be listed in the "Conditional format rules" sidebar. You can review each rule and remove them individually using the garbage can icon until all desired formatting is turned off.

Example

Let's say you have a rule that highlights numbers above 100 in column B.

  • Click on any cell in column B that has this highlighting.
  • Go to Format > Conditional formatting.
  • In the sidebar, find the rule that applies to the range B:B (or a specific range in B) and highlights values Greater than 100.
  • Click the trash can icon next to that specific rule.
  • The highlighting for numbers above 100 in column B will be removed.

By following these steps, you can effectively turn off or remove unwanted conditional formatting from your Google Sheet.
