How do you get a shirt to fit you?

Published in Shirt alterations 2 mins read

Getting a shirt to fit you perfectly can often involve making minor adjustments, especially to areas like the sleeves. If your shirt's sleeves are too long or too wide, you can easily modify them at home following a simple process.

Adjusting Shirt Sleeves for a Better Fit

One common area where shirts may not fit perfectly is the sleeves. Whether they are too lengthy or have excess width, you can tailor them to your size. This method focuses specifically on altering the sleeves.

Here are the steps to adjust your shirt sleeves:

  1. Prepare the Shirt: Turn the shirt inside out before you begin any adjustments. This allows you to work on the seams discreetly.
  2. Try it On: Put the shirt on inside out. This helps you see exactly where the excess fabric is and how the sleeve needs to be adjusted to fit your arm length and width.
  3. Pinch and Pin: While wearing the inside-out shirt, carefully pinch the excess fabric.
    • For length adjustments, pinch the extra fabric at the cuffs or along the sleeve seam near the cuff.
    • For width adjustments, pinch the excess fabric along the existing seam of the sleeve.
    • Once you have pinched the desired amount of fabric, secure it using pins. Ensure the pins hold the pinched fabric firmly in place along the line you want to sew.
  4. Remove and Sew: Take off the shirt carefully so you don't disturb the pins. Use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to sew carefully along the line indicated by your pins. As you sew, remove the pins before you reach them.
  5. Finish: Once you have sewn the new seam, you can trim the excess fabric beyond your new stitch line if necessary, leaving a small seam allowance, and finish the edge to prevent fraying.

This method allows you to easily reduce the length or width of shirt sleeves, helping a shirt that is otherwise a good fit become a great fit.
