How to Stretch Your Shoulder Blades

Published in Shoulder Mobility 2 mins read

Stretching your shoulder blades can relieve tension and improve posture. Here's a simple yet effective exercise:

A Simple Shoulder Blade Stretch

This exercise focuses on improving shoulder blade mobility and reducing stiffness. Follow these steps:

  1. Posture: Stand or sit tall with good posture. Imagine a string gently pulling you upwards from the crown of your head. Keep your chin slightly tucked to avoid straining your neck. (Reference 1)

  2. Relaxed Arms: Keep your arms relaxed at your sides. The movement will originate solely from your shoulder blades, not your arms. (Reference 2)

  3. Circular Motion: Slowly roll your shoulders upwards towards your ears, then backward as if squeezing your shoulder blades together, then downwards, and finally forwards, completing a full circle. (Reference 3)

  4. Repetitions: Repeat this circular motion at least 2-4 times. (Reference 3)

  5. Reverse Direction: After completing the circles in one direction, repeat the exercise in the opposite direction (downward, forward, upward, backward). (Reference 4)

This gentle exercise promotes shoulder blade mobility and can help alleviate stiffness and tension. Remember to maintain proper posture throughout the stretch.
