How to Make Silver Shine with Foil?

Published in Silver Cleaning 3 mins read

You can make silver shine using a simple chemical reaction involving aluminum foil, baking soda, and hot water. This method effectively removes tarnish without harsh chemicals.

The Aluminum Foil Silver Cleaning Method

This method relies on a chemical reaction to transfer the tarnish (silver sulfide) from your silver item to the aluminum foil. Here's how to do it:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Aluminum foil
  • Baking soda
  • Hot water
  • A non-reactive container (glass or plastic tub)
  • Tongs (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Container: Line a non-reactive container (like a glass or plastic tub) with aluminum foil. Make sure the shiny side of the foil is facing up. The foil needs to be large enough to completely cover the bottom and sides of the container, and also be able to be completely submerged with water.
  2. Add Baking Soda: For every gallon of water you plan to use, add 1 cup of baking soda to the container.
  3. Heat the Water: Heat enough water to completely submerge the silver items you want to clean. The water should be hot, but not boiling.
  4. Pour Water Over Items: Carefully pour the hot water over the silver items in the container, ensuring they are touching the aluminum foil.
  5. Soak the Silver: Allow the items to soak for up to 30 minutes. The more tarnished the silver, the longer it may need to soak. You'll likely see the tarnish transferring from the silver to the foil.
  6. Remove and Rinse: Either let the water cool down before handling or remove the items using tongs. Rinse the silver items thoroughly with water.
  7. Dry and Polish: Dry the silver items with a soft cloth. If any tarnish remains, you can gently polish with a silver polishing cloth.

Example:

Let's say you're cleaning several silver spoons. You have a plastic tub and will need about 2 gallons of water to cover them.

Step Action
1. Preparation Line the tub with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
2. Baking Soda Add 2 cups of baking soda to the tub.
3. Hot Water Heat 2 gallons of water until hot.
4. Submerge Carefully pour the hot water over the spoons.
5. Soak Let the spoons soak for 30 minutes.
6. Rinse & Dry Remove, rinse with water, and dry with a soft cloth.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid Mixing Metals: Don't clean silver-plated items this way, as it may damage the plating.
  • Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Monitor the Process: Check the progress periodically.
  • Not for All Silver: This method is best for cleaning heavily tarnished silver items without stones or other delicate materials.
