How to Fit a Ceramic Undermount Sink

Published in Sink Installation 3 mins read

Fitting a ceramic undermount sink involves careful preparation, precise positioning, and secure sealing to ensure a watertight and durable installation.

Key Steps for Fitting an Undermount Sink

Installing a ceramic undermount sink requires several steps, from preparing the mounting surface to securing the sink in place.

Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is crucial for a strong and reliable bond between the sink and the countertop.

  • Remove Old Material: Begin by removing any old adhesive or sealant from the countertop surface where the sink will be mounted. You can use a razor scraper to remove any old silicone that was left behind from a previous sink or installation.
  • Clean Thoroughly: After scraping, clean the mounting surface thoroughly. You should clean the countertop and the sink with denatured alcohol to remove any dust, grease, or residue. This ensures the adhesive adheres correctly.

Positioning and Support

  • Use a Template: Most undermount sinks come with a template. Position this template on the underside of the countertop to mark the exact location for the sink cut-out and mounting hardware.
  • Create Temporary Support: Since undermount sinks are installed from below, they require temporary support during installation. This can be done using wooden braces or specialized sink harness systems clamped to the countertop.

Applying Adhesive/Sealant

  • Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant or epoxy adhesive around the rim of the sink or the underside of the countertop cut-out. This forms the primary seal and helps secure the sink.

Lifting and Securing the Sink

  • Carefully lift the sink into position from underneath the countertop. Ensure the sealant makes full contact with the countertop surface.
  • Use the temporary supports to hold the sink firmly in place while you install the mounting clips or hardware. These clips pull the sink tight against the countertop, compressing the sealant and creating a strong bond. Tighten the clips evenly to avoid stressing the sink.

Final Sealing and Cleanup

  • Once the sink is securely mounted with clips or hardware, you can apply an additional bead of silicone around the seam from the underside for extra waterproofing, if necessary.
  • Wipe away any excess sealant immediately using a damp cloth or mineral spirits before it cures.

Following these steps carefully ensures a secure and watertight installation for your ceramic undermount sink.
