How do You Move Dimensions in SketchUp?

Published in SketchUp Dimensions 2 mins read

Moving dimensions in SketchUp is straightforward using the Select tool. You can move the entire dimension object or adjust its extension lines.

Moving a Dimension Object

To move the dimension as a whole, follow these simple steps:

  1. Activate the Select tool ( ).
  2. Click on the dimension object you want to move.
  3. Click and drag the dimension to its new desired location anywhere within your drawing area.

This method allows you to reposition the dimension text and lines without changing the measured distance it represents.

Adjusting Dimension Extension Lines

You might also want to change the length of the extension lines that connect the dimension line to your model's geometry. Here's how:

  1. Ensure the Select tool ( ) is active.
  2. Click on an extent point. These are the points at the ends of the extension lines where they touch your model or where the dimension begins/ends.
  3. Click and drag the extent point.
  4. To change the length of both extension lines simultaneously, drag the extent point in a direction that is parallel to the extension line itself.

By dragging extent points, you can shorten or lengthen the lines that bridge the gap between the dimension text and the object being measured.

In summary, use the Select tool to click and drag the dimension object itself to move it entirely, or click and drag its extent points to adjust the extension lines.
