Exporting files from SketchUp allows you to save your 3D models or 2D drawings in various formats for use in other software, presentations, or fabrication. The primary method for exporting 3D models is straightforward using the File menu.
Exporting a 3D Model
To export your SketchUp model into a different 3D file format, follow these simple steps:
- In SketchUp, go to the main menu.
- Select File.
- From the dropdown menu, choose Export.
- Then, select 3D Model. This action will open the "Export Model" dialog box.
- Navigate to the location on your computer where you wish to save the exported file.
- (Optional) You can change the file name from the default if you like.
- Choose the desired file format from the "Save as type" or "Format" dropdown menu (e.g.,
.dwg
,.dxf
,.3ds
,.obj
,.fbx
,.stl
, etc.). - (Optional) Click the "Options" button to configure specific settings for the chosen file format.
- Click Export.
Your SketchUp model will now be saved as a separate file in the chosen format at your specified location.
Common 3D Export Formats
SketchUp supports exporting to a variety of 3D formats, each suited for different purposes:
- DWG/DXF: Commonly used in CAD software like AutoCAD. Ideal for exporting geometry for drafting and design workflows.
- 3DS: A legacy format often used for transferring models to 3D animation and rendering software.
- OBJ: A widely supported format for exporting geometry, along with basic material and texture information. Excellent for use in various 3D applications.
- FBX: Developed by Autodesk, this format is great for transferring models, including materials, textures, and scene information, often used in animation and game development.
- STL: The standard format for 3D printing. It represents the surface geometry of a 3D object using triangular facets.
Exporting 2D Graphics
Besides 3D models, you can also export a 2D view of your model as a graphic file (like .jpg
, .png
, .tif
, .pdf
). This is useful for presentations, reports, or sharing images.
- Set up the view you want to export in the SketchUp window.
- Go to File > Export > 2D Graphic.
- Choose your save location, file name, and format.
- (Optional) Click "Options" to set resolution and other format-specific settings.
- Click Export.
Exporting files from SketchUp is a fundamental step in integrating your 3D designs with other tools and processes.
