How do I change the layer of an object in SketchUp?

To change the layer of an object in SketchUp, you can use the Layers panel and the context menu. Here's how:

Steps:

  1. Select the object(s) you want to move to a different layer.

  2. Open the Layers Panel: Go to Window > Layers (or Window > Default Tray and ensure Layers is checked).

  3. Context-Click: Right-click (or Ctrl-click on Mac) on your selection within the SketchUp viewport.

  4. Hover over "Move to Layer": A context menu will appear. Hover your mouse over the "Move to Layer" option.

  5. Select the Desired Layer: A flyout menu will appear, listing all the layers in your SketchUp model.

    • Option 1: Move to Current Layer: If you simply want to move the selected object(s) to the currently active layer, choose "Current" from the flyout menu. A dot is usually shown in the layer panel indicating the active layer.

    • Option 2: Select a Specific Layer: Select the specific layer you want to move the object(s) to from the flyout menu.

Alternatively:

While not the most direct method, ensure the desired layer is the current active layer (indicated by the dot in the layers panel) before you create new geometry. New objects will then automatically be created on the currently active layer. This does not change the layer of existing objects but sets the default layer for new objects.

In Summary:

The easiest way to change an existing object's layer is to select it, right-click, choose "Move to Layer," and then select the desired layer from the flyout menu.
