How do I add an object to a component in SketchUp?

Published in SketchUp Modeling 2 mins read

To add an object to a component in SketchUp, you can use a cut and paste method within the component's editing context. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Open the Component for Editing: Double-click on the component you want to modify. This isolates the component for editing, allowing you to add objects directly within it.

  2. Prepare the Object to be Added: If the object you want to add is external to the component (e.g., another component or group), select it.

  3. Cut the Object: Use the "Edit > Cut" command (or Ctrl+X/Cmd+X) to remove the object from its original location and place it on the clipboard.

  4. Paste the Object into the Component: While still in the component's editing context, use the "Edit > Paste in Place" command. This pastes the object into the component at the same relative location it was in before you cut it. Alternatively, you can use "Edit > Paste" to paste, and then position the object as required.

  5. Position the Object: If necessary, use the move tool (M) to precisely position the newly pasted object within the component.

  6. Exit Component Editing: Click outside of the component (in the main SketchUp model space) to exit the editing context and finalize the changes to the component.

Example Scenario:

Let's say you have a chair component and you want to add armrests to it.

  1. Double-click the chair component to open it for editing.
  2. Model or import the armrest object near the chair.
  3. Select the armrest object.
  4. Use "Edit > Cut" to cut the armrest.
  5. Use "Edit > Paste in Place" inside the chair component. The armrest will now be inside the chair component.
  6. Use the Move tool (M) to position the armrest correctly on the chair.
  7. Click outside the chair component to exit editing.

This method allows you to integrate objects directly into a component, making them a permanent part of that component's definition.
