How to Adjust a Ski Helmet

Published in Ski Gear Adjustment 2 mins read

Adjusting your ski helmet is crucial for safety and comfort on the slopes. A properly fitted helmet sits correctly on your head and stays in place.

A key method for achieving a secure fit involves the internal adjustment system, commonly a width adjustment system controlled by a dial.

Steps for Adjusting Your Ski Helmet

Most modern ski helmets feature an integrated system to fine-tune the fit around the circumference of your head. Follow these steps:

  1. Put the helmet on your head, ensuring it sits level and covers your forehead without tilting back.
  2. Locate the dial at the back of the head, typically part of an internal liner or cage system.
  3. Turn the dial gradually. As you turn it, you will feel pressure building evenly around the circumference of the liner. Turn it until the helmet feels snug but not uncomfortably tight.
  4. Check the fit: With the chin strap open, shake your head lightly. The helmet itself should no longer move or shift significantly on your head. If it moves, tighten the dial slightly more.

This internal adjustment system ensures the helmet cradles your head securely, preventing excessive movement that could compromise protection during a fall.

Securing the Chin Strap

Once the internal fit is adjusted, the chin strap is essential for keeping the helmet in place.

  • Buckle the chin strap.
  • Adjust the strap length so it is snug under your chin but not too tight.
  • A good test is being able to fit one or two fingers comfortably between the strap and your chin.
  • Ensure the strap doesn't pinch or cause discomfort.

By utilizing both the internal width adjustment system and correctly adjusting the chin strap, you ensure your ski helmet provides optimal protection and remains comfortable throughout your time on the mountain.
