How to Hand File Skis?

Published in Ski Tuning 2 mins read

To hand file skis, focus on refining the edges using precise, overlapping strokes to achieve optimal sharpness.

Filing your ski edges by hand is a crucial step in maintaining performance. Here's how to do it effectively:

Filing the Side Edges

The main goal is to shave off fine metal slivers from the edge, leaving a crisp, sharp angle.

  1. Secure the Ski: Use a ski vise to hold the ski securely with the side edge exposed.
  2. Select Your File: A medium-cut file is a good starting point. As you gain experience, you might use a coarser file for removing more material or a finer file for polishing.
  3. Set Your Angle: Use an edge bevel guide to maintain the desired side edge angle (typically between 87 and 90 degrees). This ensures consistency and prevents rounding.
  4. File Technique:
    • Use long, smooth, and overlapping strokes along the entire edge, from tip to tail.
    • Apply consistent pressure. Avoid pressing too hard, as this can cause the file to skip or chatter.
    • While the conventional method involves dragging the file from tip to tail, some skiers achieve equally sharp edges by filing in the opposite direction. Experiment to determine your preference.
  5. Deburring (Optional): After filing, use a gummy stone or diamond stone to remove any burrs along the edge. This step results in a smoother, longer-lasting edge.

Key Considerations:

  • File Maintenance: Keep your files clean using a file card or brush. Clogged files are less effective.
  • Safety: Always wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and metal shavings. Eye protection is also recommended.
  • Listen to the Edge: As you file, pay attention to the sound. A consistent sound indicates a smooth, even cut. If the file skips or chatters, adjust your technique or check the edge for damage.

By following these steps, you can effectively hand file your ski edges and maintain peak performance on the slopes.
