How Deep Is a Skin?

Published in Skin Anatomy 1 min read

The depth of the skin varies depending on the location on the body and the individual. Generally, the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, ranges from 0.2mm to 1.6mm thick. The dermis, the middle layer, is on average between 1.5mm and 4mm thick. Finally, the subcutis, the innermost layer, is typically between 2.5mm and 3.5mm thick.

For example, the skin on your hands and the bottom of your feet is thicker than the skin on your thigh or forearm. This is because these areas are subject to more wear and tear.

Here's a breakdown of the skin's layers and their approximate depths:

  • Epidermis (0.2mm-1.6mm): The outermost layer, responsible for protection and water retention.
  • Dermis (1.5mm-4mm): The middle layer, containing blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles.
  • Subcutis (2.5mm-3.5mm): The innermost layer, composed of fat and connective tissue.
