What are the two zones of the dermis?

Published in Skin Anatomy 1 min read

The dermis, the middle layer of skin, is divided into two main zones: the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis.

  • Papillary Dermis: This is the superficial layer, located directly beneath the epidermis. It's characterized by a loose connective tissue structure with finger-like projections called dermal papillae, which interlock with the epidermis. These papillae contain capillaries that provide nutrients and oxygen to the epidermis.
  • Reticular Dermis: This deeper and thicker layer is composed of dense connective tissue with thicker collagen fibers, providing strength and elasticity to the skin. It also contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.

The papillary and reticular dermis work together to provide support, nourishment, and protection to the epidermis. They also play a role in regulating body temperature, sensing touch, and providing structural integrity to the skin.
