What is Granulosum?

Published in Skin Anatomy 1 min read

Granulosum, also known as the stratum granulosum or granular layer, is a thin layer of cells found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin. It sits between the stratum spinosum and the stratum corneum (with the stratum lucidum present on the soles and palms).

The cells in the stratum granulosum, called granular cells, are keratinocytes that have migrated from the stratum spinosum and are undergoing a process of maturation. These cells start to produce large amounts of keratin, a tough protein that gives skin its strength and structure.

Here's a simplified breakdown:

  • Granulosum is a layer of cells within your skin.
  • These cells produce keratin, making your skin strong and resilient.
