The lowest layer of the skin is called the subcutis. It is also known as the subcutaneous layer or hypodermis. This layer is located beneath the dermis and is primarily composed of fat and connective tissue. The subcutis acts as an insulator to protect the body from temperature fluctuations and also serves as a cushion for organs and muscles.
