Is Sun Tan Safe?

There is no such thing as a safe tan. Tanning, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, is a sign of skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This damage can lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) states that tanning beds are not safer than the sun. Even a single tanning session can increase your risk of skin cancer. The FDA also warns that tanning increases your risk of melanoma, a dangerous type of skin cancer.

To protect your skin from sun damage:

  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
  • Cover up with protective clothing. This includes wearing a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and long sleeves and pants.
  • Avoid tanning beds.

While a tan might seem desirable, it's crucial to understand that it's a sign of skin damage. By protecting your skin from the sun, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and other health issues.
