What makes skin cool?

Published in Skin Cooling Factors 2 mins read

Skin can feel cool due to a variety of factors, including:

  • Poor circulation: When blood flow to the skin is reduced, it can feel cold to the touch. This can be caused by various factors such as heart conditions, low blood pressure, or even prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.
  • Cold urticaria: This is a skin condition where exposure to cold temperatures causes itchy welts (hives) to form.
  • Dysesthesia: This condition causes unpleasant sensations, including feeling cold or cool on the skin. It can be a symptom of various conditions affecting the nerves or skin.
  • Heat exhaustion: Although it may seem counterintuitive, feeling hot internally with cool, clammy skin is a symptom of heat exhaustion. This occurs when the body loses fluids and its ability to regulate temperature.
  • Sweating: While sweating can feel warm on the skin, it's actually a cooling mechanism. As sweat evaporates from the skin, it takes heat with it, effectively cooling the body.
  • External factors: Exposure to cold weather, air conditioning, or even cold water can also make your skin feel cool.
