What is a rash test?

Published in Skin Evaluation 1 min read

A rash test is a medical evaluation to determine the cause of a rash. The evaluation involves your healthcare provider asking about your medical history and the rash itself. They might inquire about any new products you've started using, such as soaps, lotions, cosmetics, or household cleaning supplies. The test doesn't usually involve a lab test, but your provider may take a skin sample for further analysis.

Depending on the suspected cause, a rash evaluation may include specific tests like:

  • Patch testing: This test helps identify substances causing allergic reactions on the skin. Small patches containing potential allergens are placed on your back for 48 hours to see if a reaction develops.
  • Blood tests: If certain infections are suspected, your healthcare provider may order blood tests to detect antibodies or antigens specific to the infection.

Remember, a rash evaluation focuses on identifying the underlying cause to facilitate appropriate treatment.
