An SK skin spot, often called a seborrheic keratosis (SK), is a common, noncancerous (benign) skin growth. These growths are extremely common and tend to appear more frequently as people age. They're sometimes referred to as "wisdom spots," "barnacles," or "waxy spots." SKs are not contagious.
Appearance and Symptoms
- SKs are typically raised, oval or round spots on the skin.
- They can vary in color, ranging from light tan to black.
- They may be itchy or bleed occasionally.
- They often have a waxy or stuck-on appearance.
- They can resemble warts.
Treatment Options
Several treatment options exist for SKs if they are bothersome or unsightly, including:
- Cryotherapy: Freezing the spot off.
- Electrosurgery: Using an electric current to remove the growth.
- Curettage: Scraping off the growth.
- Laser treatment: Using a laser to remove the growth.
- Dermabrasion: Using a rotating brush to remove the top layer of skin.
It's important to note that an SK skin spot is different from the "spot" addressed by SK-II's GenOptics Spot Essence. The SK-II product targets age spots, sunspots, and dark spots related to hyperpigmentation, not seborrheic keratoses.
