New skin is created by stem cells, which are specialized cells found in the deepest layer of the epidermis, called the basal layer. Stem cells continuously divide and differentiate, producing new skin cells that migrate upwards to the surface. As these new cells mature, they eventually reach the outermost layer of the epidermis, where they die and shed. This constant renewal process ensures that the skin is constantly being replaced.
