The two main types of tissue in the skin are epithelial tissue and connective tissue.
- The epidermis, the outer layer of skin, is composed of epithelial tissue. This tissue provides a protective barrier against the environment and helps regulate water loss.
- The dermis, the layer beneath the epidermis, is made up of connective tissue. This tissue provides structural support, flexibility, and elasticity to the skin. It also houses blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
The hypodermis, the layer beneath the dermis, is also made up of connective tissue, but it can be either adipose (fatty) or fibrous, depending on its location.
