What is skin type 4?

Published in Skin Type IV 2 mins read

Skin type 4, also known as Fitzpatrick skin type IV, is characterized by light brown or olive skin, darker hair and eye color, and a tendency to tan easily with minimal burning. People with this skin type typically don't freckle and rarely experience sunburn.

The Fitzpatrick skin type classification system was developed by Dr. Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in the 1970s to assess skin's reaction to sunlight. It categorizes individuals into six types based on their skin tone, hair color, eye color, and tendency to burn or tan.

Skin type 4 falls in the middle of the spectrum, offering a moderate level of protection against sun damage. While they are less susceptible to sunburn compared to those with lighter skin types, they still need to be mindful of sun protection to prevent long-term damage and skin cancer.

Here are some key characteristics of Fitzpatrick skin type IV:

  • Skin tone: Light brown or olive
  • Hair color: Darker shades of brown or black
  • Eye color: Brown or hazel
  • Sun sensitivity: Tans easily with minimal burning
  • Freckling: Rare
  • Skin cancer risk: Lower than skin types I-III, but still present
