How many types of skin are there?

Published in Skin Types 1 min read

There are five primary types of skin recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD):

  • Oily skin: This skin type produces excess oil (sebum), often leading to a shiny appearance, enlarged pores, and breakouts.
  • Dry skin: This skin type lacks adequate oil production, resulting in a tight, flaky, and sometimes itchy feeling.
  • Normal skin: This skin type has a balanced oil production, leading to a smooth, clear, and healthy appearance.
  • Combination skin: This skin type exhibits both oily and dry characteristics, often with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and drier cheeks.
  • Sensitive skin: This skin type is easily irritated by external factors like harsh chemicals, fragrances, and weather changes, often experiencing redness, dryness, or itching.

These classifications are based on the skin's natural oil production and sensitivity levels. Understanding your skin type is crucial for selecting the right skincare products and routines.
