What to Apply After Sunscreen?

Published in Skincare Routine 2 mins read

After applying sunscreen, you can proceed with the rest of your skincare and makeup routine. The order depends on the type of sunscreen and your personal preferences, but generally, sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine before makeup.

Skincare After Sunscreen

  • Moisturizer (if not already applied): While many sources recommend applying moisturizer before sunscreen, some suggest applying it afterward if you’re using a mineral sunscreen. The key is to allow sufficient time for absorption of each product before layering.
  • Makeup: Once your sunscreen has fully absorbed (typically around 20 minutes), you can apply your makeup. Ideally, apply makeup to cleansed and nourished skin, which includes using a face wash, toner, and moisturizer prior to sunscreen application. This ensures a smooth, even base.

Makeup Application After Sunscreen

Applying makeup after sunscreen is standard practice. However, ensure complete absorption of the sunscreen to prevent pilling or smudging.

  • Primer (Optional): Using a primer after sunscreen can help create a smoother canvas for makeup application and improve its longevity.
  • Foundation/BB Cream: This forms the base of your makeup.
  • Other Makeup: Continue with the rest of your makeup routine (concealer, powder, blush, eyeshadow, etc.). Applying powder after sunscreen is generally okay but use a light hand to prevent darkening of the skin.

Understanding Sunscreen Application

  • The general rule is to apply sunscreen liberally after moisturizing and before makeup application.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

The optimal order is: face wash, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen, and then makeup. Always allow sufficient time for absorption between product applications.
