Is Bio-Oil Safe in the Sun?

Published in Skincare & Sun 2 mins read

Bio-Oil itself does not offer sun protection, and some of its ingredients are sensitive to sunlight.

The referenced Bio‑Oil® Skincare Oil (Natural) contains several light-sensitive ingredients:

  • Calendula extract
  • Chamomile extract
  • Lavender oil
  • Patchouli oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Vitamin A (in rosehip oil)

What does this mean?

Exposure to sunlight may cause a change in the color of the Bio-Oil over time. More importantly, because Bio-Oil doesn't contain sunscreen, using it without sun protection can increase your risk of sun damage.

Recommendations:

  • Apply sunscreen: Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when exposed to sunlight, regardless of whether you are using Bio-Oil or not.
  • Apply Bio-Oil at night: Consider applying Bio-Oil at night to avoid direct sun exposure and potential discoloration.
  • Limit sun exposure: If using Bio-Oil during the day, limit your sun exposure as much as possible.

In summary, Bio-Oil itself is not sun-safe, as it doesn't provide sun protection and contains light-sensitive ingredients. Use sunscreen in conjunction with Bio-Oil during the day, or apply Bio-Oil at night.
