Does milk lighten skin?

Published in Skincare 1 min read

While milk contains lactic acid, an ingredient often found in skin lightening treatments, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that milk or lactic acid actually lightens skin. Although some anecdotal evidence suggests that milk can brighten the skin, clinical studies have not confirmed these claims.

Here's why:

  • Lactic acid in milk is present in small quantities and may not be effective for skin lightening.
  • Many skin lightening products claiming to use milk as an ingredient may contain other potentially harmful chemicals. The Minnesota Department of Health has even issued a list of skin lightening products containing mercury and hydroquinone, which can have serious negative health effects.

While milk might offer some benefits for skin health, such as moisturizing and exfoliating, it is not a proven skin lightening agent.
