The 10-3-2-1-0 sleep rule is a pre-sleep routine that aims to improve sleep quality by gradually winding down your body and mind in the hours leading up to bedtime. This method involves eliminating certain stimulants and activities at specific times before bed, as follows:

  • 10 hours before bed: No more caffeine. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to 10 hours, so avoiding it this far in advance helps prevent it from interfering with your sleep.
  • 3 hours before bed: No more food or alcohol. Eating too close to bedtime can make digestion difficult and disrupt sleep. Similarly, alcohol, although it might make you feel sleepy initially, can actually disrupt sleep later in the night.
  • 2 hours before bed: No more work. This includes both physical and mental work. Engaging in work-related activities close to bedtime can keep your brain active and make it harder to fall asleep.
  • 1 hour before bed: No more screen time. The blue light emitted from electronic devices can suppress melatonin production, a hormone essential for regulating sleep.
  • 0 hours before bed: Time for relaxing activities. This can include taking a warm bath, reading a book, or listening to calming music.
