How Long Is a Human Dream?

Published in Sleep Science 1 min read

A human dream typically lasts between 5 and 20 minutes.

While dream lengths vary, it's commonly believed that the dreams we experience during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep are relatively short, ranging from a few minutes to potentially up to 20 minutes. We typically experience multiple dreams throughout the night, corresponding with cycles of REM sleep. Interestingly, most dreams are forgotten shortly after waking up; approximately 95% of dreams are lost to memory.

Dreaming plays a role in various cognitive processes, including learning and consolidating long-term memories. Furthermore, the sensory experiences within dreams can differ based on individual circumstances. For example, blind people may experience dreams that rely more on auditory, tactile, and other sensory inputs compared to sighted individuals.
