How to Wear a Snorkel?

Published in Snorkeling Equipment 2 mins read

To wear a snorkel correctly, position the mask strap comfortably, attach the snorkel to your mask, and ensure the snorkel tube sits properly to allow for easy breathing above the water.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare Your Mask: Make sure your snorkeling mask fits properly and is comfortable. A properly fitted mask is crucial for a good seal and clear vision underwater.

  2. Attach the Snorkel to the Mask: Most snorkels come with a clip or holder to attach to the mask strap. Attach the snorkel to the left side of your mask strap.

  3. Adjust the Snorkel Height: Slide the clip up or down the mask strap until the snorkel mouthpiece sits comfortably in your mouth without you having to strain or bite down hard. It should be level with your mouth.

  4. Position the Strap: The mask strap should sit horizontally on the back of your head, or slightly angled upwards towards the crown. This helps keep the mask (and therefore the snorkel) securely in place. Avoid positioning the strap too low, as this can cause the mask to slip.

  5. Check for Comfort: Ensure the mouthpiece feels comfortable in your mouth, and the snorkel tube doesn't pull on your mask or feel restrictive.

  6. Test in Shallow Water: Before heading into deeper water, test the snorkel in shallow water. Breathe normally through your mouth. Make sure no water enters the snorkel. If water does enter, practice exhaling sharply to clear the tube.

Important Considerations:

  • Mouthpiece Fit: The mouthpiece should fit comfortably in your mouth without requiring excessive biting. Too much pressure can lead to jaw fatigue.
  • Snorkel Position: The top of the snorkel should always be above the water's surface when you're breathing.
  • Clearing the Snorkel: Learn how to clear the snorkel by forcefully exhaling to expel any water that may enter.
  • Practice: Practice breathing through the snorkel in a calm environment before venturing into open water.

By following these steps, you can wear a snorkel correctly and enjoy a comfortable and safe snorkeling experience.
