Soil salinity refers to the presence of excessive soluble salts in the soil, which significantly impacts its physical properties and plant health.

Key Characteristics of Saline Soils

Soils affected by salinity exhibit several distinct characteristics that hinder agricultural productivity and ecosystem function. Based on observations, including those highlighted by Tanji (2002), these soils often display compromised physical conditions and problematic salt dynamics.

Here are some key characteristics:

  • Low Structural Stability: Salinized soils tend to have poor aggregate stability. The presence of high concentrations of sodium (a common component of soluble salts) can cause clay particles to disperse, leading to the breakdown of soil structure. This makes the soil prone to compaction and crusting.
  • Low Infiltration Rate: Due to poor structure and particle dispersion, the rate at which water enters the soil (infiltration) is significantly reduced. Water struggles to penetrate the soil surface, leading to increased runoff and potential waterlogging in upper layers, while deeper profiles remain dry.
  • Low Water-Holding Capacity: While seemingly counter-intuitive, the presence of high salt concentrations reduces the amount of water available to plants, effectively lowering the soil's usable water-holding capacity from a biological perspective. Although water might be present, the high osmotic pressure created by salts makes it difficult for plant roots to absorb it.
  • Presence of Highly Mobile Soluble Salts: Soluble salts are dissolved in soil water and can move freely with water flow. As observed, these salts are highly mobile and can easily be transported within the soil profile. When soil water evaporates from the surface, salts are left behind, leading to accumulation, often visible as a white crust. This mobility also means salts are easily absorbed and accumulated within plants (Tanji, 2002).

Practical Impacts of Soil Salinity

These physical and chemical characteristics have profound practical consequences:

  • Reduced Crop Yields: High salt levels create osmotic stress for plants, making it harder for roots to take up water and nutrients. Specific ions (like sodium and chloride) can also be toxic to plants. This leads to stunted growth, leaf burn, and reduced yields or even complete crop failure.
  • Limited Plant Diversity: Only salt-tolerant plant species (halophytes) can survive in highly saline environments, severely limiting the types of crops or native vegetation that can grow.
  • Soil Degradation: The poor structure and reduced water movement contribute to overall soil degradation, making remediation efforts more challenging.

Causes and Management

Soil salinity can arise from natural processes, such as the weathering of salt-bearing rocks, or human activities like improper irrigation practices using saline water, poor drainage, and land use changes.

Managing soil salinity often involves improving drainage to leach salts below the root zone, using appropriate irrigation techniques and water sources, selecting salt-tolerant crops, and applying soil amendments that help improve soil structure.
