How to Group Parts Together in Solidworks Assembly

Published in Solidworks Assembly Management 2 mins read

Grouping parts in a Solidworks assembly allows you to manage components more efficiently within the assembly structure, making large assemblies easier to navigate and work with.

To group parts together in your Solidworks assembly, the process involves selecting the specific components you wish to include in the group and then utilizing the dedicated grouping function within the software's interface.

Selecting Parts for Grouping

First, you need to select the parts you want to group. Solidworks provides a couple of methods for doing this:

  • Direct Selection: You can select parts directly in the graphics area using Ctrl + select.
  • Box Selection: Alternatively, you can drag a selection box around the parts in the graphics area to select multiple components at once.
  • Model Tree Selection: Another effective method is to use the Ctrl + select combination directly on the desired parts listed in the model tree.

Creating the New Group

Once the parts are selected using one of the methods above, you will proceed to create the group:

  1. Locate the Palette.
  2. Navigate to the Models tab within the Palette.
  3. In the Models tab, find and right-click on the Model tree.
  4. From the context menu that appears, click Create New Group.

This action will create a new group containing the selected parts, which will typically appear within the model tree structure, allowing you to manage them collectively.

Here is a summary of the steps:

  1. Select the parts using Ctrl + select (in graphics area or model tree) or by dragging a selection box.
  2. In the Palette, on the Models tab, right-click the Model tree and click Create New Group.

Following these steps will successfully group your chosen components within your Solidworks assembly.
