Pan spine, also referred to as holospinal infection, is a rare type of spinal infection that affects the entire spine, from the cervical (neck) region all the way down to the lumbar (lower back) region.

Understanding Pan Spine Infection

According to research, pan spine infection is a subset of spinal epidural abscess (SEA). One reference notes that patients with pan spine infection who experience neurological deterioration may be considered medically unstable and unsuitable for surgery due to systemic involvement.

Key Characteristics:

  • Location: Involves the entire spine, from the neck to the lower back.
  • Rarity: A rare subset of SEA.
  • Severity: Can lead to neurological deterioration.
  • Treatment Challenges: Patients may be medically unstable for surgery.
