The spine is a complex structure consisting of multiple joints, primarily plane synovial joints.
Zygapophyseal (Facet) Joints
The joints of the vertebral arches are plane synovial joints known as the zygapophyseal joints, often called facet joints. These joints are formed between the superior and the inferior articular processes (zygapophyses) of adjoining vertebrae.
- These facet joints allow for gliding movements between the vertebrae.
- The orientation of the facets determines the range of motion available at each spinal level.
- Synovial fluid within the joint capsule provides lubrication and reduces friction during movement.
