Installing an anti-siphon valve on your sprinkler system prevents backflow, protecting your potable water supply. Here's a general process, but always consult local plumbing codes and the valve manufacturer's instructions for specifics:
-
Gather Materials: You'll need the anti-siphon valve, PVC pipe, PVC primer, PVC cement, pipe cutter, measuring tape, and fittings (elbows, couplings) as needed.
-
Turn Off the Water: Locate and shut off the main water supply to your sprinkler system. This is critical before cutting any pipes.
-
Locate the Installation Point: The anti-siphon valve should be installed above the highest sprinkler head in the zone it serves and a minimum distance above ground level (check local codes; often 6-12 inches). It is typically installed downstream of the main line backflow preventer (if present).
-
Cut the Pipe: Measure and cut the existing sprinkler pipe where you plan to install the valve. Ensure the cut is clean and square for a proper connection.
-
Dry Fit: Before gluing, dry-fit all the necessary pipes and fittings, including the anti-siphon valve. Ensure the valve's arrow points in the direction of the water flow. This step allows you to verify measurements and alignment. Note where each piece will sit before cementing.
-
Prepare Pipe and Fittings: Clean the ends of the pipe and the inside of the fittings with PVC primer. Let the primer dry.
-
Apply PVC Cement: Apply PVC cement liberally to both the primed pipe end and the inside of the fitting.
-
Assemble Quickly: Immediately insert the pipe into the fitting and give a slight twist to evenly distribute the cement. Hold the joint firmly for a few seconds until the cement sets. Repeat for all connections.
-
Allow to Cure: Let the cemented joints cure for the recommended time specified on the PVC cement can (usually 24 hours) before turning on the water.
-
Turn On the Water Slowly: Once the cement is fully cured, slowly turn the main water supply back on to the sprinkler system. Check for leaks at all connections. Tighten any threaded connections slightly if needed, but avoid overtightening.
-
Test the System: Run each zone to ensure the anti-siphon valve is functioning correctly and that all sprinkler heads are operating properly.
