  1. Closed Position: When the sprinkler system is off, water pressure is equal on both sides of the diaphragm. However, the area above the diaphragm is greater than the area below it. This results in greater force acting on the top of the diaphragm, forcing it downward to seal and prevent water from flowing through the valve.
